FAQ’s

What do I need for my first lesson?

Just come along a little earlier to fill out some forms (parent fills our form if child is under 18) wear loose clothing like jogging bottoms or shorts and a t shirt. We do train bare foot, but if you have problems then you can wear light weight trainers and bring a drink. Jewellery must be removed or taped up.

Does the parent have to stay?

We always encourage parents to stay and watch or even better, get involved and train too. However, only the Tiny Taekwon-Do (4-6 year old) parents HAVE to stay. Juniors and above can be dropped off at the start of class, and collected at the end.

Do I need all my equipment straight away?

Not at all. However, we will always encourage you to get your equipment as soon as possible, as it allows you to spar and do other forms of training, but all you need to do after your first two free lessons is set up your monthly direct debit and you are good to go. When you are ready to buy NWMA kit, we will order it for you.

Do I have to fight/spar?

Yes, you do have to spar, but you do not have to fight competitively. Also, when sparring in training, our students are instructed to be light and look after each other. You may get a little bump or bruise as accidents cant always be prevented. If you do want a little more contact, this can be arranged. You can be paired with someone of similar experienced and who also wants to spar at a higher level. Safety is always paramount.

Do I have to book to come to class?

You do not have to book, you can just turn up. However, we’d prefer it if you enquire first, so we can give you correct details and just in case class is canceled for some reason or if there is an emergency.

How much does it cost?

This depends entirely on wheat classes you wish to train in. All our classes are paid through a monthly direct debit system called, “GoCardless.”

Our Tiny Taekwondo-Do class £33 a month and includes the child’s gradings. Training once a week in our Taekwondo-Do or week/unlinmited training is £43 a month. Duel training in Taekwondo-Do and Kickboxing classes are £35 a month. Duel training in Taekwondo-Do and Kickboxing is £53 a month. We also offer safety equipment and clothing for sale. Coloured belt gradings are currently £35.

Events, Book camp, maybe just write once a year instead of Spring and Autumn.

What happens if I don’t like it and I want to cancel?

At any time you decide you’d like to stop training, then we can cancel your monthly direct debit payments right away.

In our students words…

“When I first joined the club, I was made to feel so welcome and found the energy of everyone infectious. I have always struggled with self-esteem and confidence and my Taekwondo journey has helped my mental health so much, thanks to the encouragement of Mr Bishop Snr & Mr Bishop Jnr. New Wave is truly a club I am proud to be a part of”.

What is Taekwon-Do?

Taekwon-Do is a traditional martial art from Korea which uses principles of modern science for self defence. When translated “Tae”  means to jump, kick or smash with the foot, “kwon” means to punch or destroy with the hand or fist and “Do” means art, way or method. Therefore Taekwon-Do means foot-hand-way.

Benefits of Taekwon-Do:

  • Build confidence
  • Learn self defence
  • Improve fitness
  • Make new friends
  • Opportunities to compete
  • Personal development

At New Wave Martial Arts, we still practice traditional ITF Taekwon-Do techniques, as well as more sport style sparring and self defence.

So if you’re looking for any of these benefits then come along and have your first two lessons free at New Wave Martial Arts.

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a group of stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching, historically developed from karate, Muay Thai, Taekwon-do and Western boxing. Kickboxing is practiced for self-defence, general fitness, or as a contact sport.

In the world of kickboxing there is no single international governing body. There are lots of different organisations with their own set of rules for competing such as some allowing the use of elbows and clinching.

At New Wave Martial Arts, we practice all techniques used in combat sports such as elbows, knees, clinching, low kicks and so on. We some times refer to it as just striking as that is what it is. If you ever compete, you will just have to adhere to the specific rule set.

So if your looking to learn some self defence, improve your fitness, compete, make new friends and become an overall better person then come along and have your first two lessons free at New Wave Martial Arts.

What is Tiny Taekwon-Do?

The Tiny Taekwon-Do class is for 4-6 year olds which teaches children basic martial arts, self defence and life skills whilst having fun. When training at New Wave Martial Arts your child will learn to be more respectful, disciplined, courteous and confident.

The Tiny Taekwon-Do program consist of themes to help improve the child’s life skills and motor skills. These themes are:

  • Co-ordination
  • Focus/concentration
  • Balance
  • Teamwork/leadership
  • Fitness
  • Memory
  • Emergency skills

At Tiny Taekwon-Do, we intend to help the parent and child’s bond grow. We do this by getting the parents involved by working with their child. We have the parents holding pads for them and playing games. This will certainly strengthen their relationship and will encourage the child to listen and respect you more, and of course respect other people.

So if you are interested in enrolling your child into Tiny Taekwon-Do, then please feel free come along and let them have their first two lessons which are free of charge.
