This content is for children training in our Tiny Taekwon-Do classes and their parents. We hope this helps with your practice.
At Tiny TKD, we learn basic Taekwon-Do, self defence and work on various themes. After each grading, we will start a new theme. Our themes are:
- Focus
- Co-ordination
- Balance
- Teamwork
- Fitness
- Memory
- Emergency skills
As well as content to do with Taekwon-Do, there will be some to help with these themes.
Other information.
- Training hall – Dojang
- Training suit – Dobok
- Belt – Ti
- Order of belts – White, Purple, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Red, Black.
- Why do we bow? Because it is polite and respectful.
- What do we call a man or boy in the Dojang? Sir.
- What do we call a women or girl in the Dojang? Ma’am.
- Why do we stand in a stance? (one leg in front of the other) To help keep balance, especially if someone pushes us.
- Why do we have a guard? (hands up and elbows in) So we can block to protect our head and body.
- Why do we have open hands when in our guard? Open hands is peaceful. Closed fists looks like we want to fight, and we don’t want to fight.
Focus
What is FOCUS? FOCUS is looking, listening and understanding.
We do this by using the three rules of Focus. The three rules are:
- FOCUS my EYES
- FOCUS my MIND
- FOCUS my BODY
You FOCUS your eyes by LOOKING at the person who is talking to you.
You FOCUS your mind by LISTENING and THINKING about what the person is telling you.
You FOCUS your body by keep still, this lets the person know you are FOCUSING on them.
Co-ordination
What is CO-ORDINATION? CO-ORDINATION is TELLING YOUR BODY WHAT TO DO AND YOUR BODY DOING IT CORRECTLY.
An example of CO-ORDINATION could be catching a ball, kicking pads, jumping or any other way of moving and using our BODY.
Some times we have to use our BODY and our EYES together to complete a task. An example is catching a ball. We use our eyes to look at the ball and our hands to catch the ball at the same time, this is called HAND EYE CO-ORDINATION. This can change depending on what parts of our BODY we are using.
We also learn our LEFT and RIGHT. This is for our safety, for directions and so we can find things.
Teamwork
What is TEAMWORK? TEAMWORK is working together with others. This could be in a pairs or even large groups. We work together by:
- HELPING each other
- LISTENING to each other
- TAKING TURNS
- EVERYONE doing something
- Not pushing or snatching
The result of TEAMWORK is that things get done very quickly and done very well.
An example of a Team Sport could be Football, Rugby, Netball, and Hockey.
An example of a job that involves TEAMWORK could be Police, Firefighters, Doctors and Nurses.
Fitness
What is FITNESS? FITNESS is what we get when we EXERCISE. The more exercise we do, the FITTER we will get. We can EXERCISE by:
- Taking part in sport
- Running
- Cycling
- Swimming
- Playing games
- Taekwon-Do
Why do we do FITNESS? Exercising keeps us HEALTHY. Health is important to keep us alive and well. It’s not just FITNESS that keeps us HEALTHY though. We also have to:
- Eat a well balanced diet
- Drink water
- Have good sleep
- Be hygienic like keeping clean and brushing teeth
If we can do all this and stay safe then we will be HEALTHY.
Memory
What is MEMORY? MEMORY is when we store information we have learnt and we REMEMBER it.
Why is it important to REMEMBER things? It is important to REMEMBER things, as we might need them in an emergency. For example, if your friend was to get hurt, you may have to ring 999 and give them information so they can help you. Such as:
- Where you are
- Your full name and parents names
- Your address
- Your telephone number
We also have to use our MEMORY to store important information to help us at:
- At school
- At home
- At sports clubs and hobbies
- AT Tiny Taekwon-Do
Balance
What is BALANCE? There are two types of BALANCE:
- BALANCING yourself or something
- BALANCE in your life.
An example of BALANCING yourself could be you standing on one leg.
An example of BALANCING something could be BALANCING a beanbag on your head.
BALANCE in life can be many things. One example could be eating a healthy BALANCED diet. Making sure you eat lots of fruits and vegetables and not just sweets.
Another example of BALANCING life could be learning at school and playing after school with friends.
Emergency
What are EMERGENCY SKILLS? EMERGENCY SKILLS are what we learn to help us if we are ever in an EMERGENCY and knowing what services can help us in an EMERGENCY.
The four EMERGENCY services are:
- POLICE
- FIRE
- AMBULANCE
- LIFE GUARD
Some EMERGENCY SKILLS we learn include:
- Learning how to call an EMERGENCY SERVICE using 999
- The recovery position
- Stop drop and roll
- Road safety
We will also learn about how to stay safe in and outside of our home. If we do all of this then we should know how to stay safe and be ready to help in an EMERGENCY.
