New Wave Martial Arts - Disciplines

What is Taekwon-Do?

Taekwon-Do is a traditional martial art from Korea which uses principles of modern science for self defence. When translated "Tae" means to jump, kick or smash with the foot, "kwon" means to punch or destroy with the hand or fist and "Do" means art, way or method. Therefore Taekwon-Do means foot-hand-way.

Benefits of Taekwon-Do:

  • Build confidence
  • Learn Self Defence
  • Improve Fitness
  • Make New Friends
  • Opportunities to Compete
  • Personal Development

So if your looking for any of these benefits then come along and have your first two lessons free at New Wave Martial Arts.

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a group of stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching, historically developed from karate, Muay Thai, Taekwondo and Western boxing. Kickboxing is practiced for self-defense, general fitness, or as a contact sport.

In the world of kickboxing there is no single international governing body. There are lots of different organisations with their own set of rules for competing such as some allowing the use of elbows and clinching.

At New Wave Martial Arts, we practice all techniques used in kickboxing such as elbows, knees clinching, low kicks and so on. However, when when it comes to sparring in class, we train many different rule sets, such as Boxing, point fighting Kickboxing and K1.

Competitions are all semi contact where the objective is to score points, not to knock the opponent out. When sparring in our classes you should never be hit hard enough to damage you severely but little bumps and bruises sometimes cannot be helped.

So if your looking to learn some self defence, improve your fitness, compete, make new friends and become an overall better person then come along and have your first two lessons free at New Wave Martial Arts.

New Wave Martial Arts - Camps & Events

Boot Camp

We run an adult only fitness boot camp every Spring and Autumn which is open to everyone, not just students currently training with New Wave Martial Arts. The camp has no restriction on your fitness level or experience. We do recommend a base level of fitness as there will be lots of running, body weight and strength exercises.

The boot camp runs over a weekend where you will be put through great fitness sessions, as well as adventurous team challenges competing for the boot camp trophy.

Accommodation, amenities, car parking and meals all provided on site. So if your interested in coming to our next boot camp then call or email us for more information.

Family Camp

Every Summer we hold a family camp for a weekend of training and lots of fun. This camp is open to all students training at New Wave Martial Arts and we encourage the rest of the family to come along.

Family members who do not already train with us are able to join in the training and other activities that are put on for the students.

Amenities are on camp and there is a choice for Mothers and young children to stay in accommodation, however spaces are limited. We encourage you to camp out on site and there is room for parking. A barbecue is provided on the Saturday night but you will have to provide for yourself for the rest of the time.

Christmas Parties

Every Christmas we hold Christmas parties for all the New Wave Martial Arts family to come to.

This year for the younger children we had a christmas party at Jump soft play where we had over 70 children.

For the older children, we went to Adrenalin Leisure, where they where able to have a great time swinging, bouncing and climbing around.

For the adults, we sometimes have a party with live music or we go for a meal somewhere followed by drinks.

Easter Egg Hunt

Every Easter we hold a easter egg hunt for the children, free of charge. After the easter egg hunt we tend to go for a walk and have a little picnic. The whole family is welcome.

Charity events

Every year we tend to partake in certain charity events. One we do every year is “Children in need” we will either do a “Sparathon” which is two hours of sparring or a “Padathon” which is two hours of striking pads for charity. We also have face paints and sell cakes and other things to raise money for great charities.

Competitions and Seminars

Every year there are opportunities to compete in competitions across the country, where the instructors will train and support you if you decide to enter. There is also extra training sessions and seminars to regularly attend to improve your ability.

New Wave Martial Arts - FAQ's

What do I need for my first lesson?

Just come along a little earlier to fill out a form (parent fills our form if child is under 18) wear lose clothing like jogging bottoms or shorts and a t-shirt. We do train bare foot, but if you have problems then you can wear light weight trainers and bring a drink.

Does the parent have to stay?

We always encourage to stay and watch or even better, get involved and train too. However, only the Little Puma (4-7 year olds) parents have to stay. Juniors and above can drop them off and then come back to pick them up

Do I need all my equipment straight away?

Not at all, we always encourage you to get your equipment as soon as possible as it allows you to spar and do other forms of training, but all you need to do after your first two free lesson is to pay for the licence which lasts for the year

Do I have to fight/spar?

Yes, you do have to spar but you do not have to fight competitively. Also, our sparring is called semi-contact, which means its only touch contact and more of a game than a fight. When you spar you will never be hit hard but you may sometimes get a little bump or bruise as accidents can't always be prevented. Lastly, if you do want a little more contact and so does your partner then you can go a bit harder but only when agreed and so its safe.

Do I have to book to come to class?

You do not have to book, you can just turn up. However, we’d prefer it if you call or email just in case class is canceled for some reason or if there is an emergency.
